“For
many years, alcohol and drug dependency was viewed as a moral issue
versus a disease. People often felt ashamed of their addiction and hid
both the problem and solution. Today it is time to celebrate recovery
as well as help those who still suffer from this devastating disease.“
These
were the thoughts behind the creation of Houston’s Ride for Recovery.
As
recovering addicts and motorcycle riders, several Memorial Hermann Prevention
and Recovery Center (PaRC) staff and alumni joined forces to create
a ride that would celebrate recovery, acknowledge the fun people have
in recovery, raise donations for several nonprofit male and female recovery
shelters in the community, as well as step out of the shadows of the
shame of addiction. Since September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction
and Recovery Month we decided that September would be the perfect time
for a ride.
2010
marks the PaRC's Fith Annual Ride for Recovery. We invite any and
all to get on their bike (or in their car) and celebrate the gift of
recovery.
The
Ride for Recovery will start at MH PaRC – 3043 Gessner (3 miles
north of I-10 and 1 mile East of Beltway 8 - between Kempwood and Clay
on Gessner) at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday September 18, 2010. The 100-mile
ride will end back at the PaRC for a barbeque luncheon, speaker, and
music.
